This book is intended for allied dental personnel who want to understand the clinical use of dental materials. Our aim is to answer the "why" questions students have as they begin learning the basics of materials preparation and use. Students tell us understanding is easier when theory can be related to a "story," that is, a real-world experience to which they can attach their new knowledge. Over the years we have developed a framework for teaching materials in which dental procedures are the story. We begin with the basics, such as what items are made with materials, provide routine terminology so each class member can understand what the others are saying, then proceed to the stories: prevention, diagnosis, cosmetic improvement, tooth restoration, and replacement. Better student and graduate understanding has in turn led to more meaningful patient education, plus more conscientious materials preparation and use. We hope you also find this framework useful.
For all teachers, how to teach to many different types of learners is a major consideration. In this text, we have attempted to provide several different learning avenues: the written word, pictures of procedures that may be unfamiliar to the beginning student, traditional self-tests, crossword puzzles, and case studies. It is unlikely that each student will want to complete all of the learning exercises, but we hope that each will find more than one learning method that is helpful. We welcome your comments and suggestions.
