I am a college professor tasked to teach an Evidence Based Medicine course. I decided to divide the course into two parts: Part I would be understanding of the medical literature, and part II would be patient education. In terms of patient education, I did not want a book with a long "laundry list" of practical advice about "what works best" in patient education. I was looking for a book that started from the THEORIES of education that are applicable in healthcare environments (theories backed by robust research), and that went on to explain how these theories can be applied in healthcare to help patients learn and cooperate in order to improve their health. From my experience as an educator, students learn best by getting the "big picture" first, rather than a long list of stand-alone "to do's."
I searched for many weeks on the internet and on Amazon, ordered a number of books on patient education, and NONE of these books were helpful to me. And then I came across a description of this book, Health Professional as Educator, by Dr. Bastable and her colleagues. The description sounded very good to me, but when I ordered it I was very anxious, because I thought that I would probably waste my money yet again on something not as good as it sounds. Well, today I actually received the book, and I LOVE IT! It is EXACTLY what I needed all along! Hooray! This book is highly professional, and yet extremely readable. I also love the term "health care professional" that the authors use throughout, because this term makes it possible to use the book when one teaches students from various health disciplines, and not just nursing, etc. Anybody who is looking for a book to teach students (whether undergraduates or graduates) about patient education should order this book without hesitation. In my opinion, it is the BEST book in the field.

Book was received as specified and on time. Thank you for shipping it quickly. This is a GREAT book if you will be learning to teach others. It has specific instructions of how people learn, how to teach, how to create patient education materials, and how to evaluate it. A must have and one that you will keep to refer to for the rest of your practice!
