By way of disclosure: I received the book and some of the CDs when I enrolled in classes taught by the authors.
The book covers a wide range of material starting with very easy concepts and then rapidly advancing to more advanced grammar. That will prove to be quite challenging for students with no prior exposure to Spanish. However, since the book does not assume that the reader has a prior background in Spanish there is a fair amount of basic grammar information that an advanced learner will understandably want to ignore. These are problems inherent in the attempt to write a book that will be useful to both beginners and advanced students. In other words, the book isn't perfect, but that's OK. I think that virtually all students interested in medical Spanish will find the book useful. Also, the book is targeted at people who work in health care in the United States. It does not attempt to address all of the communication needs of somebody who is planning to go on mission trips or work alongside Spanish speaking doctors. Having a clear focus is a good thing.
Students with no background at all can benefit from this book, but they will need additional resources. Ideally, the beginning student should take a class of some kind rather than trying to learn to speak a language by reading. If taking a class is not practical, the book's authors do offer a set of CDs that cover the material in the book and I would recommend buying the entire package rather than just the book itself McGraw-Hill's Spanish for Healthcare Providers, Second Edition (McGraw-Hill's Spanish for Healthcare Providers (W/CDs)).
