Infants, Toddlers, and Caregivers is an ideal introduction to care and education in the first three years of life, featuring a respectful, cohesive approach inspired by Magda Gerber and Dr. Emmi Pikler, pioneers in what Gerber called “Educaring.” The text emphasizes the value of play and exploration, as well as giving careful attention to those caregiving times, when relationships grow and an abundance of learning occurs.

I'm sure most people will order this book because it is required for a college course, but regardless of the reason you order it - be forewarned. This book is not about infant and toddler development - it's about Magda Gerber (and of course Emmi Pickler and Anna Tardos). Gerber was of course one of the most heavily influential early childhood researchers and educators of our time, but she was not the only one and I don't think RIE is the only method of child rearing that should be taught- particularly to students in any Early Childhood department. I felt cheated by this textbook for only exploring one person's ideas about early childhood development, and I was turned off by its tone. The book is almost laughably judgmental (I shouldn't say almost- I literally laughed multiple times) of other forms of child rearing and ideas about child development and it never questions even one of Gerber's ideas or explores any of the ideas of other important early childhood researchers. I think it is extremely important for early childhood educators to study Gerber, but the authors should be clear that she is the subject of this book, not infant and toddler development.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is now or intends to work with infants and toddlers. Parents, caregivers as well as educators should read this.
