Hospitals and health systems are facing many challenges, including shrinking reimbursements and the need to improve patient safety and quality. A growing number of healthcare organizations are turning to the Lean management system as an alternative to traditional cost cutting and layoffs. "Kaizen," which is translated from Japanese as "good change" or "change for the better," is a core pillar of the Lean strategy for today's best healthcare organizations.
Kaizen is a powerful approach for creating a continuously learning and continuously improving organizations. A Kaizen culture leads to everyday actions that improve patient care and create better workplaces, while improving the organization's long-term bottom line.
Healthcare Kaizen: Engaging Front-Line Staff in Sustainable Continuous Improvements focuses on daily continuous improvement, or Kaizen, for healthcare professionals and organizations. The book shares detailed mechanics for facilitating the Kaizen improvement process. More importantly, it covers the management mindsets and philosophies required to make Kaizen work effectively in a department or as an organization-wide program.
All of the examples in the book are real healthcare improvements, large and small, that were shared by Franciscan Alliance Health System and other leading organizations, with over 200 color pictures and illustrations of Kaizen improvements from many different departments and settings.
This book will be helpful to healthcare organizations that have embraced weeklong improvement events, but now want to move beyond just doing events into a more complete Lean management system.
In May 2013, it was announced that Healthcare Kaizen is a recipient of a prestigious Shingo Research and Professional Publication Award.
See also the 2013 book from the same authors, The Executive Guide to Healthcare Kaizen, that provides a shorter overview for leaders that emphasizes their role in creating a culture of continuous improvement.

The crisis in healthcare is real and it is the people in the hospitals, clinics, and nursing facilities that will solve this crisis as it lumbers towards us. The people working in healthcare are (for the most) smart, resourceful, and dedicated to their patients. This new book on Healthcare Kaizen gives them practical and yet comprehensive methods to address the waste and create on-going and increasing improvement. The crisis can not be solved by piecemeal projects. As the authors of Healthcare Kaizen demonstrate, it requires executive leadership, a real vision of excellence, and proven methods of problem solving and improvement. I highly recommend this book.

I preordered the book as soon as it was announced and waited eagerly as the date for publishing approached. My high expectations were not dissapointed as I read the book cover to cover in a few days. I immediately noted down some great quick win examples that we can use at our hospital to start a kaizen journey. I love the idea of small cycle change as the hospital already has enough big change projects. After talking to the CEO about the book he got me to order 10 copies, one for each of the C-level people (and a few spare).
If you are looking for a book packed with proven examples of continuous improvement at work in hospitals, you don't need to look further than here.
