Top rate learning aid!

This is a regional teaching/learning aid.
The schools for the Deaf in the Pacific-NW area use this book/DVD and the Bravo series.
The grade schools, high schools, colleges and universities use this book/DVD also.

Western Oregon University offers a great ASL/English Interpreting Bachelor-degree course and they use this book as well, including many others of course. It's perfect for this area.

I live in Pacific NW and this is a very acceptable book/DVD here.
I learned beginner's ASL from this book and the Bravo series.

In my opinion, it is an advantage to learn how to sign from different regions, not a disadvantage or negative aspect. It just means you are becoming more multi-lingual in a sense. The Deaf do not mind if we use a sign from a different region, any more than hearing people mind if we say--y'all or you-guys--at least, being a relocated Texan, I HOPE y'all don't mind. LOL In turn, the Deaf will teach us the sign that is most acceptable in the particular region in which we/they live. Variety makes life spicy, yes? Knowledge is power.

I have an old first edition (1981): American Sign Language--A Comprehensive Dictionary by Martin L.A Sternberg, Ed.D. 5,000 signs. Impressive. I love it! It's interesting to see how some of the older, two-handed, cumbersome signs have evolved into better ergonomic signs. This language is always improving.
I got mine online from a used-book store for about $6. Quite a steal as it sold for $40 in 1981. I would search for the latest revised edition and cherish it!

A very good, current dictionary to have is the American Handshape Sign Language Dictionary (new revised 2010 edition from Gallaudet).

Incredible book; very readable and comprehensive and without a doubt a must have. I recommended the stroke chapter to anyone starting their journey in neurology. It is my go to reference with the added benefit of being engaging. It is extremely well written, which makes the absorbed material quite memorable. Essential for both the wards and the boards. Cannot recommend this book highly enough!

I just received this text on Tuesday. Prior to this text--I was struggling with reading the cold, dense, lifeless texts of a test prep company.

What a breath of relief, when I opened Diane Gehart's Mastering Competencies in Family Therapy. I had previewed it on Amazon's "Look Inside" link, and was drawn to its layout and catchy headings. Also I heavily used her co-authored, easy to assimilate Theory-Based Treatment Planning For Marriage and Family Therapists to study for my master's program comprehensive exam so I expected her solo written book to be just as easy to navigate. (Actually it appears she had some help from content experts--like the section on ethics written by a lawyer).

I just completed chapters one to three--so I'll give you my review up to this point. Reading this book is like seeing the model of our beliefs as system/relationally thinking therapists applied in written form. It feels as if the text, the author is relating to me--I feel like I'm in a relationship with the author, and she really cares that I get this material. Her definition on negative vs. positive feedback pp. 39-40 is the most user friendly framing of the concept that I've seen and I like that she gives me a heads up--that those concepts can be tricky. She also makes these little comments in parenthesis for example on p. 12 in commenting about libraries she says, "Oh I forgot, no one steps foot in these places anymore; I meant 'surf' the library's web page while still in your bunny slippers." See--Gehart is talking to the reader and building rapport from a book--so cool!

Gehart's headings for each model are framed in a down-to-earth, conversational manner.

I would strongly not recommend this program for nursing students that have not had previous education on drug calculations. This is required in my ACBSN program and it has been a headache.

1) The questions in the test modules have examples that are not covered in the learning tools portion.

2) When testing, it offers poor rationals as to why your answer was wrong.

3) You must be exact in your answer for the answer to be correct: "6 mL/hr" and you type 6 ml/ hr, 6 ml / hr, 6ml/hr, 6 mL/hour or 6, will all be marked wrong and you are left wondering if this is the one example that wanted 5.98, 5.9, 5.987, or maybe 6 was the answer etc... . In other words you will spend more time trying to type the exact accepted answer as opposed to learning the material.

4)When deciding to email your test results to your instructor, it will not send 4/5 times. Me and my cohort took each test multiple times because the test score results page will fail to email results, close, and there is no way to track or record your test score without printing, scanning, and then emailing a photo page of your passing score.

5)The syringe portion is completely different from all material in our nursing books and we had to learn two different systems of syringe choices. It may vary by facility or text book but it was frustrating none the less.

If you must buy this program as a required item save yourself time! Write down the questions and answers to the test module questions as you go. This will save time when you have to retake the test multiple times until find the perfect answer format. Next, print out your test results page after EVERY passing test!
