I have been lifting weights for about 2 years on a multiple times per week basis. I have a home gym with both a Vectra machine and bench and free weights. I am a victim of Dr. Kenneth Cooper's aerobic revolution of the 70's and 80's, now with bad knees and bad ankles and chronic tendinitis and 2 herniated disks and spinal arthritis, which is what brought me to weight training in the first place. Over the years I have tried my own program, and I have purchased several programs from the "Guru's" and I pretty much always wound up either injured or I would make progress for a while and then it would seem I would start going backward. My most recent program was the New Rules of Lifting program which I have found to be a very good program. I've done that for a year and have made progress and remained injury free. That program is basically a two or three times per week program and I noticed that I needed the rest between sessions to keep improving. Sometimes I would go down to one session per 5 or 6 days and I found when I lifted next it was easier to make an advance. That couple extra days allowed a more complete recuperation. The exercises in the new rules program are basically the big 5 that is described in the Body by Science program, so over the course of the year I have developed good form with each exercise and a good knowledge of how my body feels during the lift and post lifting.

When I read this program it seemed to fit well with what I had been doing. I was of course skeptical of the 12 minute claim as the New Rules program is a timed set of reps across the exercises of about 45 minutes per session. In the New Rules program if you were anal about the timed aspect you would be forced into an anaerobic state of metabolism which I think is desirable in a workout.
I purchased this book several years ago and used this method for over a year with excellent results. Having come back and read the reviews of the book, I would like to clarify several misconceptions:

This Exercise program is designed for two types of people:
1. People already involved in a very active lifestyle, and
2. People who are not capable or interested in spending a large amount of time in the gym.

For people in the Group 1, the authors insist that fitness is best achieved using the S.A.I.D principle; that is, Specific Adaption to Imposed Demands. They teach that fitness for any sport is best achieved by direct participation in that sport or performing sport specific drills. Their weight program is designed to supplement the sport program and is intended to maintain or increase strength while participating in the program. One is able to focus most of their time on the sport specific training without sacrificing a lot of time in the weight room, since a minimal amount of time is actually required to maintain or increase strength. Dr. McGuff uses specific examples of his BMX training as well as examples from other sports to illustrate how the program is meant to be used to augment sports training.

Long distance runners who want or need a higher level of cardiovascular training are not discouraged to "supplement" their strength training with long distance running or sprints. In fact, it is the other way around; those people who need or desire a high level of cardiovascular fitness do not need to sacrifice a lot of training time in also developing or maintaining a significant level of strength.

Review

"Tovah taught me how to resist the temptation to fix everything, and instead give my children the opportunity to learn how to problem-solve for themselves." (Sarah Jessica Parker)

"Rarely does someone with so much knowledge write in a way that is so accessible and heartwarming. What Tovah has created will help every parent stand on their own loving ground, assured that they are creating the foundations for their child to grow into an adult who will have a deep sense of purpose and the will to effect much-needed change." (Kim John Payne, author of Simplicity Parenting, Beyond Winning and The Soul of Discipline)

"Dr. Klein has provided a critical resource for parents -- she combines state-of-the-science research with examples of and practical guidelines for everyday toddler-parent interactions. Most importantly, Dr. Klein appreciates that every toddler and parent is unique and therefore, there is no single parenting 'recipe.'" (Nim Tottenham, Ph.D., developmental neuroscientist at UCLA)

"How Toddlers Thrive shares Tovah Klein’s truly unique perspective—a thorough knowledge of child development research and practical experience working effectively with hundreds of toddlers and their families. She illuminates how the world looks and feels to toddlers and shares practical advice, such as helping toddlers learn the life skill of taking on challenges. It is the wisdom we need to thrive as parents!" (Ellen Galinsky, author of Mind in the Making and president of the Families and Work Institute)

“In this wonderful book, Tovah Klein draws on her deep understanding of toddlers and their development to offer a treasure-trove of wise and practical advice. Placing a special emphasis on seeing the world through toddlers' eyes, Klein shows how we can help them meet life's challenges with confidence and enthusiasm. How Toddlers Thrive will be cherished by parents and professionals alike.” (William Crain, author of Reclaiming Childhood: Letting Children Be Children in Our Achievement-Oriented Society)

"Dr. Klein's wonderful book is a parenting milestone, unraveling the mysteries of your toddler while helping you create a clear path for his or her future happiness and success." (Harley A. Rotbart, M.D., author of No Regrets Parenting: Turning Long Days and Short Years into Cherished Memories with Your Kids)

"Tovah Klein’s book is as much about parenting as it is about toddlers. Like a wise and practiced friend, she introduces us to the world of toddlers, helping us understand the wonder, worry, and bewilderment toddlers experience and the challenges and joys of parenting them. The book is filled with fabulous advice, informative anecdotes, and a point of view that teaches you to trust yourself no matter how demanding your little ones may seem to be." (Samuel J. Meisels, Executive Director of the Buffett Early Childhood Institute at the University of Nebraska)

“If only there was one single, sensible, sympathetic book that answered all your toddler questions. Well there is. And you're holding it: An easy-to-read source that explains what toddlers do, why they do it, and whether you have to jump in or not. The good news is: Often the answer is ‘not.’” (Lenore Skenazy, founder of the book and the blog Free-Range Kids)

“There are a lot of parenting books out there, but this one is unique—it's told from the point of view of the child! Dr. Klein's firsthand experiences with young children provides parents an understanding of child development within the context of family dynamics. She doesn't judge parents, instead she empowers them with knowledge about the whys behind their children's behaviors.” (Rosemarie T. Truglio, PhD, SVP of Curriculum and Content for Sesame Workshop)

“Child psychologist Klein, director of the Barnard Center for Toddler Development, has a keen understanding of what makes toddlers tick. . . . Parents of the 2–5 set will find plenty of practical ideas and strategies to make the preschool years less stressful, creating what Klein describes as a relaxed and loving ‘toddlertopia.'" (Publishers Weekly)

Posts about Download The Book How Toddlers Thrive: What Parents Can Do Today for Children Ages 2-5 to Plant the Seeds of Lifelong Success from 4shared, mediafire, hotfile, and mirror link Why do some children thrive, and others struggle?

The answers may surprise you.

New research indicates that the seeds for adult success are actually planted in the toddler years, ages two to five. In How Toddlers Thrive, child psychologist and director of the renowned Barnard Center for Toddler Development Dr. Tovah P. Klein cracks the preschooler code, revealing what you can do to help your toddler grow into a fulfilled child and adult—while helping you and your toddler live more happily together, every day.

Dr. Klein’s research and firsthand work with thousands of toddlers explains why the toddler brain is best suited to laying the foundation for success. New science reveals that drivers such as resilience, self-reliance, selfregulation, and empathy are more critical to success than simple intelligence. Dr. Klein explains what you can do today to instill these key qualities in your toddler during this crucial time, so they are on track and ready to learn when they enter school at age five.

How Toddlers Thrive explains why the toddler years are different from any other period during childhood, what is happening in children’s brains and bodies at this age that makes their behavior so turbulent, and why your reaction to their behavior—the way you speak to, speak about, and act toward your toddler— holds the key to a successful tomorrow and a happier today. This provocative new book will inspire you to be a better parent and give you the tools to help you nurture your child’s full potential. Stop fighting with your child and start enjoying every minute of your time with them . . . while planting the seeds of happiness and success that will last a lifetime. A great start. That what this author is asking us to create for our toddlers. But, how to you create a great start for your child?

The author, a psychologist and head of a research center and nursery school argues that you must must first understand how the brain of a toddler works so that you can help him or her thrive on her terms. This is different than the instincts of most parents, and many books, where you hope to learn how to make kids listen. And, it's different than controlling kids' 'childish' or 'self-centered' whims or shaming them into following our rules.

When you're thinking about some common parenting challenge, like getting 2-4 year-olds to share, you need to learn what the experts know about toddler's brains and incorporate that knowledge into what she calls your 'Parenting POV.' Then you you can re-frame the problem both in your mind and during your time with your child. You are freed to stop banging your head against a brick wall because you understand what your child is capable of.

When we, as parents understand that 2-year-olds have no capacity to share, that they can't understand that concept, then we can stop being embarrassed when they take things from other kids. We can stop stressing and sounding like a broken record. The author gives us some strategies to re-frame the situation (have two or more of certain loved toys available for play dates. Use language like "I see that you are playing with that truck. It looks like XXX (another child) wants to play too. When you are finished, she can play."

This is not a one size fits all book. You gotta think about your background and what you bring to your relationship with your child. But you get piles of smart advice that helps you slow down, relax, re-frame and give (what this expert knows) is a better response to the common challenges of parenting a young child.
By Thomas Fiorella Jr
I was given a review copy of this book prior to the official release date. Any parent looking for insight into ways they can better connect with their toddler will be satisfied with this book. I know I was. As a mother of 4, I've experienced my share of toddler meltdowns. Klein does a nice job weaving stories of toddlers and their parents in situations and how they may have handled them differently. She really focuses on how you can create a meaningful relationship with your child and steers clear of 'stock' advice and generalizations about toddlers. I felt like I was really getting an expert opinion. My only wish is for an audio version for listening in the car while running errands. But this is a book the average parent can dip into rather than read cover to cover. The chapters are broken up nicely by topic and don't necessarily need to be read in order, however I do think the first three chapters should be read in order.
