For an office based physician this thouroghly updated and referenced text-book offers the best evidence based information in short time of turning fewer pages. I use it more than Harrison's text-book as it more SOAP related and better cross-referenced.
The editors of this brand-book made current changes, making it state of the art standard-bearer of text-books for any practicing physician. Moreover, my money is well spend when I bought this from Amazon.com store that let be browse books before I buy and has Nordstrom like sevice that makes book buying a dream.

Provides excellent practical advice for common situations in primary care. We need widespread acceptance of such guidelines to stop runaway costs caused by unnecessary testing and to avoid treatments that do not work.

Infant Research and Adult Treatment is the first synoptic rendering of Beatrice Beebe’s and Frank Lachmann’s impressive body of work.  Therapists unfamiliar with current research findings will find here a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of infant competencies.  These competencies give rise to presymbolic representations that are best understood from the standpoint of a systems view of interaction.  It is through this conceptual window that the underpinnings of the psychoanalytic situation, especially the ways in which both patient and therapist find and use strategies for preserving and transforming self-organization in a dialogic context, emerge with new clarity.

They not only show how their understanding of treatment has evolved, but illustrate this process through detailed descriptions of clinical work with long-term patients.   Throughout, they demonstrate how participation in the dyadic interaction reorganizes intrapsychic and relational processes in analyst and patient alike, and in ways both consonant with, and different from, what is observed in adult-infant interactions.  Of special note is their creative formulation of the principles of ongoing regulation; disruption and repair; and heightened affective moments.  These principles, which describe crucial facets of the basic patterning of self-organization and its transformation in early life, provide clinical leverage for initiating and sustaining a therapeutic process with difficult to reach patients.

This book provides a bridge from the phenomenology of self psychological, relational, and intersubjective approaches to a systems theoretical understanding that is consistent with recent developments in psychoanalytic therapy and amenable to further clinical investigation.  Both as reference work and teaching tool, as research-grounded theorizing and clinically relevant synthesis, Infant Research and Adult Treatment is destined to be a permanent addition to every thoughtful clinician's bookshelf.

Infant Research And Adult Treatment: Co-constructing Interactions by Beatrice Beebe (Associate Clinical Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry, New York State Psychiatric Institute, Columbia University) and Frank M. Lachmann (Clinical Assistant Professor, New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis) is a scholarly, meticulous and comprehensive summary of the authors extensive and longer term efforts to research and better understand the psychology of parent-infant bonds and the thought processes of infants. Applying their work to current psychoanalytic treatments of adult patients, a body of original research that traces psychological problems all the way back to pre-verbal childhood days, Infant Research And Adult Treatment is both a reference and a treatment guide, which is confidently recommended for academic psychology/psychiatry reference libraries, as well as supplemental reading lists or for students, researchers, and practitioners with a professional interest in contemporary psychoanalytic research.
By Midwest Book Review
This book opened up new ways of seeing interactive patterns during sessions. The concept of co-regulating interactions as mediatiated by non verbal behaviors is invaluable to the attuned therapist. I have always enjoyed Frank Lachman's writings for his clinical wisdom. Adding Beeby' store of knowledge and facinating and informative data on infant research made this book a "must read" for anyone doing pscychotherapy or psychoanalysis. This book was a joy to read. Highly recommend it.

Review

“This ground-breaking book is one of the most creative and valuable contributions to psychoanalysis to appear in the last decade.  Applying the fascinating discoveries of infant-mother observational research to the treatment of adult patients, Beebe and Lachmann open up new ways of understanding and working with the myriad communications between patient and analyst that form the core of the analytic process.  An educational experience in itself, this book should be required reading for anyone working in the mental health field today.”

- Theodore J. Jacobs, Ph.D., New York and NYU Psychoanalytic Institutes

“This extraordinary book is a critical landmark in the psychoanalytic literature.  The culmination of decades of dialogue between the coauthors, Infant Research and Adult Treatment provides rich new metaphors, scenarios, and narratives for practitioners.  Beebe and Lachmann lay out a sophisticated paradigm of the origins of relatedness and a complex systems view of mind as organized in interaction.  Disposing definitively of any residual sense that clinical psychoanalysis and infant research cannot fully address, and benefit from, the insights of the other, they bring the conversation between these disparate disciplines to an exciting and creative new level.”

- Lewis Aron, Ph.D., Director, NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis

“Infant Research and Adult Treatment contributes greatly to our understanding of how infants interact with their caretakers.  In addition, the authors ambitiously invite us to rethink some of our assumptions about what it is we do with our patients that leads to change.  It seems to me they succeed admirably. . . . their effort must be applauded and their book should be enjoyed and appreciated for all it has to teach us.”

- Ruth R. Imber, JAPA

Computational methodologies and modeling play a growing role for investigating mechanisms, and for the diagnosis and therapy of human diseases. This progress gave rise to computational medicine, an interdisciplinary field at the interface of computer science and medicine. The main focus of computational medicine lies in the development of data analysis methods and mathematical modeling as well as computational simulation techniques specifically addressing medical problems. In this book, we present a number of computational medicine topics at several scales: from molecules to cells, organs, and organisms. At the molecular level, tools for the analysis of genome variations as well as cloud computing resources for medical genetics are reviewed. Then, an analysis of gene expression data and the application to the characterization of microbial communities are highlighted. At the protein level, two types of analyses for mass spectrometry data are reviewed: labeled quantitative proteomics and lipidomics, followed by protein sequence analysis and a 3D structure and drug design chapter. Finally, three chapters on clinical applications focus on the integration of biomolecular and clinical data for cancer research, biomarker discovery, and network-based methods for computational diagnostics.

This is a great book for learning how to do all necessary drug calculations for nurses. I recommend purchasing this book.
By Eddie Turner
The content of the book is fine. Clear and concise. However, I just had the book over a few days and the binding split in the middle and has started to come loose. I purchased the book new. My book is no exception-all of my fellow nursing students that purchased this book-new also-have had the same issue. We use this book frequently and some paid a lot for their book and it is frustrating to have a book fall apart during its first week of reading.

“This is an utterly fascinating book. . . . Elizabeth Pisani writes with enormous verve and acerbity, her prose alive with anecdote and metaphor. . . . The Wisdom of Whores is a great read.” (Stephen Lewis, The Globe and Mail)

If Michael Moore were to dress up in women's clothing and prowl through the red-light districts of Jakarta, we might get a book similar to "The Wisdom of Whores." But this author not only has Moore's street smarts and a lively writing style, she also has a PhD in infectious disease epidemiology. Elizabeth Pisani knows whereof she speaks, because she has spent years on the streets and in the dingy bars where AIDS futures are traded.

"Whores" is one of a rare species of book such as Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" or Jessica Mitford's "The American Way of Death" that has the power to reform an industry. In this case, the author exposes the AIDS prevention industry that sprang up when First World governments started to shovel money into the vital struggle against the HIV retrovirus. Or at least, that's where they should have shoveled it. If you think that the U.S. Government's emphasis on chastity over latex is a great way to spend your tax dollars, you definitely need to read this book.

I was particularly interested in learning why the AIDS epidemic in Asia has not taken off with the same alacrity as it did in South and East Africa.

Elizabeth Pisani may resemble one of Dante Gabriel Rossetti's ethereal Pre-Raphaelite models, but she talks about sex, drugs, and AIDS in the language of her subjects: the sex workers of Indonesia, China, East Timor, and Africa (foreskin soup, anyone?). She describes how governments are wasting billions of AIDS dollars on "schoolgirls and housewives and Boy Scouts" when they should be concentrating on preventive measures for the people who are actually at risk for this deadly disease: "junkies and gay guys and the people who buy and sell sex.
Elizabeth Pisani's The Wisdom of Whores - Bureaucrats, Brothels and the Business of AIDS is a great book (along with a great website). Elizabeth Pisani is an epidemiologist with years of experience working on HIV/AIDS (or sex and drugs, as she puts, which sounds a lot, well, sexier) at a variety of agencies, including UNAIDS. The book is the story of her frustrations at the way the international community, national governments, NGOS and AIDS activists have dealt with the epidemics, as well as her hopes in some of the progress made.

I got interested in the book when I read an interview Pisani gave to the Guardian. The interview kinda billed the book as a controversial work where Pisani would be the mean lady who said people got AIDS because of their stupid behavior and not enough was being done because of political correctness. So, I was ready to get really pissed off with the book. That has not been the case at all.

Elizabeth Pisani is a scientist and that perspective is pervasive in the book. That's a good thing. I much prefer sober, "just the facts" perspective to touchy-feely stuff. Actually, one of the main frustrations that Pisani deals with in the book is the fact that AIDS had to be made about innocent wives and children for the international community to gear into action, as opposed to the real populations at risk in most parts of the world (except Africa, and she shows that even in Africa, the innocent wives and children trope does not work, as the data show): drug injectors and people who buy and sell sex.

To me, precisely because the book is data-driven, it was not controversial. My reaction was more, "well, if that's what the data show, so be it.

I have been a dental hygienist now for two years, and was still a little thrown back when patients hit me with questions that I just wasn't postive I knew the answer to. Ones such as: "Why does dental treatment cost so much?" or "Are you any good?" And the toughest question of all to answer, "Do you treat patients with AIDS?" These rough questions often left me fumbling to come up with a well thought out, yet correct answer. That was until I read Robin Wright's book. This book helped me to be more comfortable answering the not so easy questions that come up when I am conversing with patients, and even helped me to communicate better with the office staff as well. Because I am able to answer these questions more effectively due to this book, it has helped me to develop a better rapport with my patients, and has built up their trust in me as a dental health care provider. Reading this book has taught me to really become a better listener in general, and to understand my patients questions and concerns. Until I read this book, I never really knew how rewarding being a dental health care provider could be, because I was always nervous about saying the "right" thing. Now I am more confident in myself, and in turn I feel that my patients are more confident in me as well.
By A dental hygienist
This is a phenomenal how to book. The scripts are well thought out and well written.
Front desk staff, assistants and doctors can learn a great deal in how to effectively communicate the many problems that can arise in a dental office.
Scripts can be reviewed as problems arise.
Very well organized and easy to understand, I recommend it highly for books of this type.
For the price, it is an incredible bargain!

With the explosion of sequence data in public and private databases and the coming explosion of gene expression data in a similar vein, it is becoming increasingly important to understand how to apply well-established data analysis and data classification methods that have been developed in other fields to this field---to try to make sense of the data, to glean biological insights from it, to categorize the data, and to put all of these to good use in industrial applications.

This book introduces the main methods of data analysis and of data classification--as applied to sequence and gene expression analysis--to the biologist and to the computer scientist in this field. It contains material that is presently being taught by the author in the course Data Analysis, Modeling, and Visualization for Bioinformatics at the University of California, Santa Cruz Extension to workers in the biotechnology industry in Silicon Valley.

Despite of an appearance of being mathematically sound, Jagota's book is full of hand-waving and imprecision. The author jumps from one topic to another using unexplained terminology (particularly in examples.) I also don't trust the author's attitude of commenting on the well established statistical terminology in a way that can confuse and mislead the reader. One example of such misleading comments is implying the existence of "symbolic random variable." In fact the "symbolic random variable" IS a "usual" random variable, as it should. But it is a minor problem comparing to the overall lack of precision, missing background explanations and often inadequate references.
In my judgement the book could be used by experienced bioinformaticians as a non-essential desk reference. Beginners and serious students should keep far away from it.
By A Customer
I'm a beginner to the field, but have decent mathematical background. This book reads more like a collection of teacher's notes than a clear guide to understanding the subject areas. It could use better organization such as placing clear explanations of where these algorithms should be used before describing them. The limited examples aren't always clear. The author is very terse. Sometimes this leaves a new reader without an explanation on part of a formula.
I don't know if there is a better book out there. However, this one could be vastly improved by having the author sit down with people trying to read it and incorporating their feedback. In conjunction with his class I can see how they might work together. Without a class to get further explanation, some of this material is very tough to understand.

From The New England Journal of Medicine

The copyright page of this book proclaims that the paper on which it is printed is acid-free. The same cannot be said of the contents. Hunting the 1918 Flu describes the sometimes acrimonious relationship between the initiator of the hunt (the author) and some of the people she recruited to carry it out. The story is fairly widely known. In 1918-1919, in one of the worst epidemics in recorded history, an influenza virus dubbed the "Spanish flu" killed about 20 million to 40 million people worldwide. The virus was extraordinarily virulent. Historical accounts tell of people who were well in the morning, sick and in bed by midday, and choking to death by evening, their lungs swamped with blood, foam, and pus. Projectile nosebleeds were common, and cyanosis meant almost certain death. The 1918 influenza virus was never isolated (the human influenza virus was first isolated in 1933), but antibodies in the serum of survivors showed that it was related to a virus later found to infect swine in the United States. Why was the 1918 influenza virus so powerful? For some researchers, finding the answer would be the crowning achievement of their lives. In 1951, the bodies of several persons who had died of the flu in 1918 in Alaska and which had been buried and preserved in the permafrost were exhumed. Samples were taken from them in an attempt to isolate the virus, but no live virus was obtained. This was, perhaps, just as well, because the sophisticated containment facilities now considered necessary to house dangerous human pathogens did not exist in 1951. (Figure) In 1992, Kirsty Duncan, a geographer then at the University of Windsor in Canada, began to search for other victims of the 1918 flu whose bodies had been buried and preserved in permafrost. Eventually she located the bodies of seven young coal miners who had died in 1918 and were buried in the cemetery of the little village of Longyearbyen in Spitsbergen, Norway. Duncan's book describes her efforts to exhume these bodies and obtain tissue samples for analysis -- not to isolate the live virus but to find bits of the virus's RNA that could be sequenced with the use of techniques that had not been available in 1951. To conduct this work, Duncan had to gain the permission of the Norwegian authorities and recruit a team of virologists and other technical experts. She found that the former task was much less difficult than the latter. It is clear that many of the scientists she invited to join what she referred to as "my team" regarded this young Canadian geographer with a mixture of contempt and respect. On the one hand, she was perhaps her own worst enemy, coming across as a vain, self-centered person full of her own importance and sanctimonious to a degree. It is also clear why some of the scientists she invited to join her team found some of her behavior irritating. One was heard to say, "Young lady, I have spent all my life working on influenza. You are a neophyte in this area." The virologists, on the other hand, had their own faults -- they were ruthless, egotistical, deceitful, arrogant, and uncontrollable. At one stage of the work at the exhumation site, Duncan ordered that no one should talk to the media except herself. Imagine, then, her feelings when one of the scientists was caught near the buried bodies, hiding in a ditch, making a tape recording for the press. Some of the unpleasantness between Duncan and the virologists seems to have been unnecessary and should never have occurred. For example, after the expedition was over, a meeting was held in London to discuss the results. Duncan was not invited to this meeting, and when she turned up and forced her way in, she was more or less told by the organizer to "get lost." It is sad to learn that the person who started the whole project, no matter how irritating she may have been, was treated so disrespectfully. Despite all this, after six years of work, everything came together. The graves of the seven miners and the apparent depth at which their bodies were buried were located by ground-penetrating radar. Containment facilities were set up, the bodies were exhumed, and tissue samples were obtained for analysis. One thing was wrong, however. The ground-penetrating radar had suggested that the bodies were buried deep in the permafrost. Alas, they were not. They were in the upper, active layer, which had repeatedly thawed and then frozen again over the years. The tissue samples were pretty well ruined, and, as far as I am aware, no sequencing results of any RNA fragments of the 1918 influenza virus taken from the samples from Spitsbergen have been reported. But there is more to the story. At the same time that all this was going on, in the United States Ann Reid and Jeffrey Taubenberger (who was, at one point, a member of Duncan's team but had dropped out to do his own work) had been sequencing bits of RNA from the virus in samples of lung tissue obtained from military personnel who had died from the flu in 1918. The lung tissue had been preserved in paraffin blocks, and in a series of incredibly painstaking experiments some sequences of RNA of the 1918 flu virus were obtained. This work came to the attention of Johan Hultin, who had been a member of the 1951 expedition to Alaska. Hultin called Taubenberger and offered to return to Alaska to take more samples from the frozen bodies. Taubenberger asked Hultin when he could go, thinking it might be in a year or so. The answer was, "Not this week, but I could go next week." Hultin did go and was able to obtain some well-preserved lung-tissue samples, which have now made possible the determination of much of the RNA sequence of the 1918 influenza virus. Hultin's success was enormously distressing to Kirsty Duncan. She referred to him as "the Boy Scout" and when they later met refused to talk to him. Her ungracious behavior is understandable. Duncan's bloated, over-funded, overpublicized expedition, which had taken six years to organize, had failed, whereas someone else, working on his own, quietly and with no publicity and little in the way of funds, had succeeded. I should mention that, so far, the sequencing of the RNA of the 1918 influenza virus has not given any answers as to why the virus was so lethal. What about the book itself? Is it worth reading? Duncan describes in some detail almost every communication between herself and the scientists on her team. I have never met Duncan, but I have known some of the flu virologists for a long time, and I found her descriptions of their individual characters accurate and fascinating. Whether the average reader would feel the same, I have no way of knowing. William Graeme Laver, Ph.D.

An extraordinary book for anyone eager to understand the hidden motives that shape our lives.

We are all storytellers-we create stories to make sense of our lives. But it is not enough to tell tales; there must be someone to listen.

In his work as a practicing psychoanalyst, Stephen Grosz has spent the last twenty-five years uncovering the hidden feelings behind our most baffling behavior. The Examined Life distills more than fifty thousand hours of conversation into pure psychological insight without the jargon.

This extraordinary book is about one ordinary process: talking, listening, and understanding. Its aphoristic and elegant stories teach us a new kind of attentiveness. They also unveil a delicate self-portrait of the analyst at work and show how lessons learned in the consulting room can reveal as much to the analyst as to the patient.

These are stories about our everyday lives; they are about the people we love and the lies we tell, the changes we bear and the grief. Ultimately, they show us not only how we lose ourselves but also how we might find ourselves.

This is a book about the relationships between psychoanalysis and language. The central relationship concerns that which is not said - the silences in between propositions. Grosz's genius is to match form with function and relate his stories in a completely non-didactic manner, but so compellingly that the conclusion strikes the reader as sudden insight. This phenomenon is exactly the core event in the psychoanalytical process, and the main event of a good narrative tale. Grosz demonstrates both, repeatedly, and shows how psychoanalysis can affect the patient, the analyst and the reader (and by extension, the world). Individually, the stories are unique, moving and trans-formative.

This book is a wonderful series of stories about the way people deal with emotional and psychological difficulties. It does more than expain how and why people behave, it also opens up important philospophical questions that need to be discussed and examined in order for us to reach a state of self awareness, genuineness and honesty. Stephen Grosz writes with great humility and love of learning. A great read for anyone who is psyhcologically minded and likes to ask "why?"

A flame-throwing epidemiologist talks about sex, drugs, and the mistakes (dismal), ideologies (vicious), and hopes (realistic) of international AIDS prevention.

When people ask Elizabeth Pisani what she does for a living, she says, "sex and drugs." As an epidemiologist researching AIDS, she's been involved with international efforts to halt the disease for fourteen years. With swashbuckling wit and fierce honesty, she dishes on herself and her colleagues as they try to prod reluctant governments to fund HIV prevention for the people who need it most—drug injectors, gay men, sex workers, and johns.Pisani chats with flamboyant Indonesian transsexuals about their boob jobs and watches Chinese streetwalkers turn away clients because their SUVs aren't nice enough. With verve and clarity, she shows the general reader how her profession really works; how easy it is to draw wrong conclusions from "objective" data; and, shockingly, how much money is spent so very badly. "Exhibit A": the 45 billion taxpayer dollars the Bush administration is committing to international AIDS programs.
