It's a cute story with nice rhyming text as Luke's teeth try to persuade Luke's friends to take them, and the colorful illustrations complement the story very well. I think kids will get the message.

I am a pediatric dental assistant and since reading the book have shared the story about 10 times. The little kids love it imagining the teeth jumping from one animal to the next. They all thought it pretty funny.

Review

The Sun, January 2009
“Steingraber’s ability to meld literary prose with complex scientific information has made her a best-selling author. Like her hero Rachel Carson, whose 1962 book Silent Spring led to the ban on the pesticide DDT and kick-started the grass-roots environmental movement, Steingraber somehow finds language beautiful and compelling enough to seduce readers to sit through a science lesson.”

The Ithacan, 2/12/10
“Jeff Cohen, director of the Park Center for Independent Media, said that Steingraber’s expertise in writing and biology as well as her personal experience created an unbelievable combination. ‘What she’s brilliant at—almost in a league of her own—is mixing personal passionate stories with totally comprehensive and accurate science,’ he said. ‘It’s not easy to do, it’s not easy to make complex scientific issues interesting, but no one does it better than Sandra Steingraber.’”

TheSmartMama.com, 3/6/10
“I thought I would talk about two of the books that most moved me to do more, to do better, to live a less toxic life. The first is Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring and the second is Sandra Steingraber’s incredibly powerful Living Downstream: An Ecologist’s Personal Investigation of Cancer and the Environment …Why these two books? Because they point out something very, very telling about the link between the lives we live and the cancers we get.”

The Maine Organic Farmer & Gardener, Spring 2010
“Steingraber presents a clear, cogent and convincing case for the environmental roots of cancer.”

Gaia Fitness blog, 3/11/10
Living Downstream is a very well-written book by Sandra Steingraber about the status of the world in which we live and it’s affects on our lives. If you haven’t read it, I highly recommend picking it up. It will likely give you a whole new perspective on the health of our world and us.”

Ithaca Journal, 4/2/10
“A part-memoir/part-scientific treatise about her battles with cancer, and the environmental roots of many cancers.”

Ithaca Times, 3/31/10
“Part analysis and presentation of available scientific information on the links between cancer and the environment and part memoir.”

Tuscon Citizen, 4/20/10
“In this second edition of a contemporary classic, Steingraber, a cancer survivor, biologist, and mother, builds a convincing case that many cancers can be prevented through environmental change…This spare, beautifully written book, originally published in 1997, presents a passionate, hopeful view, asserting that it’s a good thing that the environment has such influence over cancer because, she insists, we can do something about it.”

InfoDad.com, 4/29/10
“A book with a strong personal as well as societal orientation…The book’s language is more plainspoken and thus more accessible than that of many other books warning of environmental hazards.”

Energy Times, May 2010
“Beautifully written, Living Downstream blends [Steingraber’s] own tale—a cancer diagnosis at age 20—with an environmental detective story…If you’ve ever wondered about the link between pollution and cancer, read Living Downstream.”

Ms., Spring 2010
“In the film, as well as in her memoir of the same title, Steingraber moves to break the silence about chemical carcinogens by doing what Rachel Carson couldn’t: use her own diagnosis to prove a scientific point.”

Toronto Star, 5/19/10
“Ecologist Sandra Steingraber is the Rachel Carson of the new millennium”: “A personal and scientific inquiry… They call her the poet laureate of the environmental health movement.”

It is only rarely that I have purchased a book based completely on hearing of seeing an interview of the author. That is, however, the pathway that led me to the second edition of Sandra Steingraber's incredibly powerful narrative "Living Downstream". The interview, conducted by TV Host Bill Moyers, was aired this year just before Earth Day 2013, and in it Steingraber discussed her reasons for joining in the protest against "fracking" which led to being jailed.

Since this is a second edition of a book published originally over a decade ago, there are of course numerous updates. All of them, however, simply emphasize that the facts and experiences the author shares are becoming increasingly critical. Steingraber, born and brought up on an Illinois farm, was diagnosed at the age of 20 with bladder cancer. She survived the initial bout, and became a PhD biologist. She has since dedicated her life to the environmental, genetic and biochemical study of cancer, and the resulting environmental activism that is focused in her books and civil actions such as the protest discussed in the Moyers interview. This particular narrative acknowledges the extreme impact that Rachel Carson's famous book "Silent Spring" had on Sandra's own developing activism and deep concern about the across-the-board impact of runaway pollution of all sorts on the health of our planet and the beings inhabiting it.

Again, though, I find myself grateful for my own organic chemistry background, because a great deal of Steingraber's discussion goes into the somewhat technical details of the main carcinogenic pollutants that result from insecticide and herbicide use, chemical, paper and plastics manufacturing, fossil fuel extraction and burning, hazardous waste storage and trash incineration, and so on.

This book is laid out in a logical format; you are shown the technique, the rationale, given clinical vignettes, possible obstacles, cross-references to other techniques to be used in conjunction or perhaps instead of a particular method, as well as a homework assignment for the client. This resource reflects the wisdom born out by many years of practice, as well as understanding how the mind thinks and operates; responses rooted in compassion and an empathy for the human condition.

Dr. Leahy focuses on concepts, from automatic thoughts to schema-focused therapy. This resource is necessary for the clinician not just because of the variety techniques, there are actual handouts for the therapist and the client to use.

I relied heavily on this book during my counseling internship as a go-to resource with very good results. I plan on using this book, as well as the others that Dr. Leahy has written, to inform my practice for many years to come. The homework assignments as well as the forms proved to be very practical and useful for the client.

This book is highly recommended for the novice as well as the veteran practioner alike. 5+ Stars. A must have for your professional library. I cannot recommend this book enough! It was so helpful!
By Rocco B. Rubino
The book contained many essential cognitive restructuring skills, schema work and emotional regulation methods for CBT therapist to make us in their daily practice. There are many forms available for daily application, and this is a good reference.

How should we understand the fear and fascination elicited by the accounts of communicable disease outbreaks that proliferated, following the emergence of HIV, in scientific publications and the mainstream media? The repetition of particular characters, images, and story lines—of Patients Zero and superspreaders, hot zones and tenacious microbes—produced a formulaic narrative as they circulated through the media and were amplified in popular fiction and film. The “outbreak narrative” begins with the identification of an emerging infection, follows it through the global networks of contact and contagion, and ends with the epidemiological work that contains it. Priscilla Wald argues that we need to understand the appeal and persistence of the outbreak narrative because the stories we tell about disease emergence have consequences. As they disseminate information, they affect survival rates and contagion routes. They upset economies. They promote or mitigate the stigmatizing of individuals, groups, locales, behaviors, and lifestyles.

Wald traces how changing ideas about disease emergence and social interaction coalesced in the outbreak narrative. She returns to the early years of microbiology—to the identification of microbes and “Typhoid Mary,” the first known healthy human carrier of typhoid in the United States—to highlight the intertwined production of sociological theories of group formation (“social contagion”) and medical theories of bacteriological infection at the turn of the twentieth century. Following the evolution of these ideas, Wald shows how they were affected by—or reflected in—the advent of virology, Cold War ideas about “alien” infiltration, science-fiction stories of brainwashing and body snatchers, and the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Contagious is a cautionary tale about how the stories we tell circumscribe our thinking about global health and human interactions as the world imagines—or refuses to imagine—the next Great Plague.

Thomas S. Kuhn's classic book is now available with a new index.

"A landmark in intellectual history which has attracted attention far
beyond its own immediate field. . . . It is written with a combination
of depth and clarity that make it an almost unbroken series of
aphorisms. . . . Kuhn does not permit truth to be a criterion of
scientific theories, he would presumably not claim his own theory to be
true. But if causing a revolution is the hallmark of a superior
paradigm, [this book] has been a resounding success." --Nicholas Wade,
Science

"Perhaps the best explanation of [the] process of discovery." --William
Erwin Thompson, New York Times Book Review

"Occasionally there emerges a book which has an influence far beyond its
originally intended audience. . . . Thomas Kuhn's The Structure of
Scientific Revolutions . . . has clearly emerged as just such a
work." --Ron Johnston, Times Higher Education Supplement

"Among the most influential academic books in this century." --
Choice

--One of "The Hundred Most Influential Books Since the Second World
War," Times Literary Supplement

Thomas S. Kuhn was the Laurence Rockefeller Professor Emeritus of
linguistics and philosophy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
His books include The Essential Tension; Black-Body Theory and the
Quantum Discontinuity, 1894-1912; and The Copernican
Revolution.

I'm not sure if it is still the case, but there was a time when Kuhn's book was _the_ most frequently cited book in scientific literature. With all respect to my fellow reviewers, it might be a tad bit arrogant to dismiss such a book as "puerile."
Before Kuhn, we were taught in school that scientific progress was linear, that it was an unending progression of refinements and developments, with one "truth" leading to the next "truth." Kuhn's insights including pointing out that such a linear progression was mostly a lie. His thesis was that the major developments in science were mostly revolutionary. That some "truths" turned out to be false. Astronomy was revolutionized by Galielo and Copernicus, and man was divested from the center of the universe. Physics was revolutionized by Newton. Biology and Darwin. It didn't hurt that plate tectonics came along shortly after Kuhn published, and Kuhn looked like his model was predictive, too.
Part of Kuhn's impact, I have to admit, was a result of the time which the book was first published. In the middle and late 1960's, questioning authority was the heart of any undergraduate's thinking, and Kuhn's ideas were read by some as a license to question all authority.
Perhaps as a consequence, Kuhn's model has been carried by other writers beyond all reason, with everyone from sociologists to New Age fuzzies usurping his terminology, making "paradigm shift" a nearly instant cliche. But his influence has gone far beyond those who want to mis-apply his ideas to everything from post-modern dance to sociobiology. Uniformitarianism has been bloodied, perhaps permanently. By geologists, evolutionists, archaeologists and more; the influence has been pervasive and real.
Thomas Kuhn performed a signal service for historiography of science by studying how new ideas and new ways of thinking displace the old. He invented the term 'paradigm shift' to describe what happens when 'normal science' runs into 'anomalies' and enters a 'crisis', which in turn leads to a 'scientific revolution'. Nobody had heard of such things before, so Kuhn had a scoop. He sketched some historical examples in iconoclastic style; the result is this short book, first published forty years ago and still wowing Cultural Studies students today.

Much of what Kuhn the historian of science says here is sensible and well taken. It has certainly been influential, perhaps in ways the author never intended, and should be read for that reason. But there are odd omissions. The greatest paradigm shift in physics since Newton - the adoption of fully-fledged quantum mechanics after 1925 - finds no significant place in this study. Eminent physicists, including Einstein, and even Schrodinger, one of its founders, regarded the new paradigm with deep distaste on aesthetic and philosophical grounds. Yet the methodology was adopted universally almost at once. What sociological factors, what structures of power and patronage brought this about? We are not told.

It is when Kuhn puts on his philosopher-of-science hat and tells us about the 'incommensurability of paradigms' that we should question what he means, and more especially what some people have read into it. The idea is that Archimedes or Aristotle, encapsulated in their ancient world-view, would have been unable to see what Newton was getting at in his 'Principia'; and likewise Newton if you gave him a copy of Dirac's 'Quantum Mechanics'.

For whatever reason, my campus bookstore does not sell the paperback version of this book. Even renting it from my bookstore was more expensive than just buying this book from this seller. I had another student ask where I got it. There is NOTHING different between this book and the hardback version the other students have in my class. Page numbers are the same, word-for-word everything is the same. The seller even rushed the shipping at no additional cost to me when I wrote to them that I needed it for a class. All in all, a happy purchase.

I made the mistake of renting this textbook from apex_media in an attempt to save money. It seemed like a great idea since renting was only $51.75 as compared to $136.99 for purchase. Unfortunately the copy they sent me had been heavily used and the binding began to come apart by the end of the semester. This text was for an online course so it was never transported in a book bag or mishandled in any way. There was nothing I could do because it was past the 30 day return window when it started coming apart. After my class was completed I promptly returned the text. Now I have received an email from Amazon notifying me that I have been charged an additional $171.30 and they are sending the book back to me. Not only have I been forced to buy a book I no longer need, but I have been charged $223.05 for a used book that I could have gotten new for $136.99! I really wish this would have worked out considering that I will need over $700 worth of textbooks for next semester. Now I know it is better to buy and resale than try and rent from Amazon.

I'm a Senior nursing student and this book is WONDERFUL!!! Although we learn a lot in nursing school, IV therapy is one thing that we all seem to have to learn "on the job". I was so confused until I found this book!!! It explains everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) in very easy to understand terms (probably good even for beginning nursing students). I have recommended it to all of my fellow nursing students, and many others find it as helpful as I have!
    By "ree6876"
Every healthcare profession from Paramedics,LPN's RN's and even Physicians will find this book helpful. The book is full of various methods of starting IV's and troubleshooting. The other reviews state the book is good for nurses without much IV experience, but the book is a nice way to review your skills and make changes to your daily practice of starting IV's.
