From Publishers Weekly

Any woman contemplating a career as a physician or already working in the profession will gain a good deal of insight from this collection of personal essays and poems by female physicians over the last century and a half. Organized into categories such as "Internship and Residency," "Mothering and Doctoring," and "Barriers," the anthology presents feminine and feminist perspectives on all aspects of a medical career. Most of the pieces are contemporary and previously unpublished, solicited by Chin, an internist and former Columbia University medical professor. In her essay "We're Not in Kansas Anymore: Men as Medical Mentors," pediatrician and author (Her Own Medicine) Sayantani DasGupta describes how her search for a "female" professional mentor turned up a vital male role model instead. Psychiatrist Bhuvana Chandra's evocative poem recalls how much it meant to her father that she became a doctor. Several pieces deal with reconciling the commitment to patients with the commitment to family life, such as Molly Carnes's down-to-earth "Balancing Family and Career: Advice from the Trenches." Chin also provides a historical overview of the barriers that faced 19th-century women physicians like Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to graduate from an American medical school, and Harriet Hunt, whose recollections are among the archival pieces featured in the anthology. This is an engaging and frequently inspiring collection.

As a nursing student, taking pharmacology for the first time I thought I would buy this guide to help me! Now as I am writing this after my pharmacology final I have come to the conclusion that this guide was useless to me! I opened it maybe once this semester. My suggestion is to not buy this guide unless mandated by your professor. The textbook that this guide goes with has and online study program that comes free with the book. I found that more helpful, and easier to use than this guide. My final conclusion is forgo this if your can and use the online study guide that comes with the text book instead.

Too many mistakes in this 8edition one. Answers does not agree with the what texts writes. I have contacted the publisher about possible mistakes, but no response was given from the publisher nor the author of this study guide( this study guide's author is different from author of the text). This study guide may possibly enforce some wrong information. I do not recommend this study guide.

Review

"...very valuable reading for advanced students, or anyone else interested in the place of humans in the world..." Journal of the Royal Anthropological Society

"This book achieves an unusual and important synthesis of the large-scale evolutionary, social and environmental influences on human health and survival. This ecological perspective, highlighting the history of disease and wellness, the state of our epidemiological environment, and the general impacts of recent cultural trends on well-being, is essential if we are to achieve a sustainable future." Paul R. Ehrlich, Bing Professor of Population Studies, Stanford University, and author of Human Natures

"Human Frontiers, Enviornments and Disease is a big, beautiful, and infuriating book that must be read by anyone seriously concerned with the viability of our only planet." Devra Davis, Lancet

"This impressive book by an eminent public health scientist explores our most important relationship: our interaction with the environment. Broad in scope, it is essential reading for all concerned with assuring future human health--and our very survival." Robert Beaglehole, Professor of Public Health, University of Auckland Senior Advisor, Health and Sustainable Development, World Health Organization

"The style is relaxed but succinct: I have seldom encountered a text where the essential points about disease causation were given so pleasantly and effectively within a short paragraph." British Journal of General Practice

"In this book Tony McMichael brings alive this fascinating dimension of history. Here is a book to make us think differently....it is a clear, lively, elegantly presented argument of wide scope in which unfamiliar issues are neatly put together. It is a tract for our times." Financial Times

"Outstanding, intellectually stimulating, and with refreshing new ideas, it is a meticulously researched book, with a 36-page bibliography. It merits a prominent place on the bookshelf of policy-makers, researchers, and teachers alike." Global Change and Human Health

"a big, beautiful, and infuriating book that must be read by anyone seriously concerned with the viability of our only planet...important work." Lancet

"The British epidemiologist McMichael takes his readers on a sweeping but accessible excursion covering the relationship between people and diseases since the beginning of civilization."ls Foreign Affairs

"...this book is innovative and important not only because of its subject matter, but also because of the way in which it is addressed. McMichael discusses the major public health issues of today by showing us how we got to where we are now, and synthesizes the large-scale evolutionary, social and environmental influences that have shaped human health over the last few millenia...outstanding..." International Journal of Epidemiology

Book Description

This compelling account charts the relentless trajectory of humankind across time and geography, and its changing survival patterns, from several million years ago when our ancient ancestors roamed the African savannah to today's populous, industrialised, globalising world. This dynamic expansion of human frontiers--geographic, climatic, cultural and technological--has encountered frequent setbacks from disease, famine and dwindling resources. The central theme of the book encompasses the social and environmental transformations wrought by agrarianism, industrialisation, fertility control, social modernisation, urbanisation and consumerism and how this affects patterns of health and disease.

McMichael's synthesis is the evolutionary synthesis and he is ruthless in his rigour. People are humans ... are Homo sapiens ... are one of the primates ... one of the animals ... one of the planet's living species. By any objective criteria humans have reached plague proportions and our future is bleak.
McMichael takes Darwin's theory of natural selection, with its three elements, variation, competition and differential reproductive success and extends Darwin's approach using the more recent ideas of self-organizing complexity and of emergent properties.
He considers the way humans have diverged in the last 10,000 years from the pattern established over 5 million years of evolution. This diversion has (a) lead to many diseases and unhealthy conditions and (b) modified the local and global environment in ways which have clear health implications for the human species.
I do not have space here to go through his description of the diseases and conditions, so will merely list some of them and refer you to the book for an illuminating, scientific discussion of their causes, why they have become more common over the past half century and their possible treatments. Auto-immune diseases, polio, childhood asthma and hay fever, inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, insulin-dependent (childhood onset) diabetes, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, lactose intolerance, skin cancer.
McMichael also deals with the contentious issue of genetically modified foods. This is one of the best parts of the book as it takes the non-specialist reader carefully through the underlying science and presents the pros and cons of GM.
While the author does mention the issue of mental health in relationship to our wacked-out species within the planet's growing urban population, I think he misses an opportunity to consider the obvious that the human ecologist Paul Shepard covered in his book NATURE AND MANDESS: our species developed into what it is biologically and psychologically in the Pleistocene. When that 'world' ended thousands of years ago, our species--in the blink of eye evolutionarily speaking--was not equipped in its brain to deal with the changes. The birhrate, and humane methods of raising children changed over night as well. Shepard seems to argue that we literally went 'nuts' as a result (agriculture, wars, walled chaotic cities, shorter life spans of dubious quality during the rise of ag, psychotic leaders, strange other-worldly monotheistic religious-belief systems, George Bush..need I go on?)

I bring up Shepard because this author is aware of his work. McMichael says on page 21: "We can thus understand, says Shepard, the inner human needs for contact with wilderness, with animal species, and with symbolic place. To depart from the conditions, the rhythms, and the interdependence of the natural world is both to stunt our own human essence and to risk damaging the environment's support systems.

"Cowan has charted the territory for a medicine of the past and the future and restores one of the vital links for this to happen—the healing power behind our relationship with the plant world."—Malidoma Somé, author of Of Water and the Spirit: Ritual, Magic and Initiation in the Life of an African Shaman

"Eliot Cowan's inspiring Plant Spirit Medicine explores the intrinsic unity and connectedness of all living things. It extends the boundaries of consciousness to include not just humans and animals but plants as well. Important not only because of its profound implications for healing, this book is a blueprint for our survival. It illuminates the kind of sacred regard we must develop for all of life on Earth if our species is to survive and thrive."—Larry Dossey, MD, author of One Mind: How Our Individual Mind Is Part of a Greater Consciousness and Why It Matters

Since it's first printing in 1995, Plant Spirit Medicine has passed hand-to-hand among countless readers drawn to indigenous spirituality and all things alive and green. In this updated edition, Eliot Cowan invites us to discover the healing power of plants—not merely their physical medicinal properties, but the deeper wisdom and gifts that they offer.

Enriched by many new insights, this guide unfolds as a series of chapters on how plant spirit medicine helped Cowan resolve specific challenges in his own healing journey and in his work with others. In the telling, we learn how plant spirits can directly communicate with and aid all of us, including:

I read the first edition in 1999 and I am thrilled to get the updated new edition. It is even better than the first edition with more chapters. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves plants, nature or has a longing for connection and spiritual healing. It is a fun book of stories. This book led me to receive Plant Spirit Medicine, and I still get PSM treatments 9 years later and continue to benefit from this healing. Now I'm a plant spirit medicine healer trained by the author and I love offering this healing work to others.
By Megan Montero
I first read Eliot Cowans book in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. For me it was the next step in a journey towards deepening and enriching my life through relationship with our natural world. The Findhorn Garden book had paved the way for the revelation that the plants want to collaborate with us for our benefit and healing. Eliot Cowan's book is rich with stories from all over the world as he traveled to meet native healers and unfold a new understanding about how to enter into relationship with the local plants. There is humor and compassion as well as a beautiful insight into the indigenous world view. In this recent edition a lot of fresh new material has been introduced to give readers a deeper awareness about plant and other teachers

Review

Humphreys covers not only the disease's effects on its victims and their families, but also its impact on commerce, government and the scientific community.

(Familty Tree Magazine)

Humphreys is to be commended for a job well done. This superior study exhibits the canons of historical scholarship at their finest. The thesis is clearly stated and convincingly explicated. The research is exhaustive. The writing is felicitous and compelling. There is no hint of bias. The work will appeal to a wide audience, including historians of the South, historians of science and medicine, and social historians. It will prove to be an enduring, perhaps path-setting, contribution to the literature of the South and of science and medicine.

(Bulletin of the History of Medicine)

Humphreys excels by the sheer power of her analysis... to argue convincingly that the imperative to control fever directed the development of Southern and Federal health institutions; that the objectives, attitudes and achievements of Southern public health officials were strikingly different from those of their Northern counterparts; and that the problem of yellow fever was essential in bringing about the U.S. Public Health Service... at her best Humphreys is able to cogently examine and illuminate the meaning of specific events, situations, and social processes.

(Norman Gevitz Journal of the American Medical Association)

In working her way through the bureaucratic infighting, intraregional rivalries, muddled scientific debates, medical uncertainties, professional power plays, business pressures, and personal jealousies that characterized this relationship in the South, Humphreys throws new light on such shadowy subjects as quarantine politics, the role of the federal government in public health, and the economic implications of epidemic disease... this is an excellent and heuristic piece of work.

"Yellow Fever and the South" is not about the suffering and death from the repeated visits of this terrifying disease, although it is about the panic. The suffering and death can be found in other histories.

Humphreys, a medical doctor, wrote this dissertation for a history degree, and it traces the evolution of public health organization in the South from the Civil War to and a little beyond the last yellow fever epidemic in the United States in 1905.

It is full of surprises.

Yellow fever was not the greatest killer in the South. TB, typhoid, malaria, and the debilitations of pellagra, hunger, hookworm etc. killed more people. But those deaths were background and people took them as they came. Yellow fever visited sometimes every summer, sometimes not once in a decade.

When it did, though, it spread panic. Business was almost shut down. It is Humphreys' contention, no doubt correct, that it was the interruption of business, not suffering and death, that inspired or forced local and state governments to found departments of public health.

That was a sword that cut two ways. Since the true vector for the fever was unknown until 1901, cities would invoke quarantine against other cities, which may not have had the disease, for commercial advantage. In the countryside, "shotgun quarantines" of panicked citizens overrode the attempts -- when they were made -- to coordinate the official measures.

Because the southerners could not trust each other, by the 1890s they were ready to turn public health over to the national government. This from men who had, in many cases, carried arms for state's rights in the `60s!

It is unfortunate that some reviewers of this book hold such a myopic view. I own this book and find myself referring this and other similar texts, such as "Deglutition and its Disorders" by Adrienne Perlman and Konrad Schulze-Delrieu, frequently. Clearly, not all individuals with dysphagia benefit from dysphagia therapy. In my humble opinion, the skills to identify patients who can benefit from SLP intervention for management of dysphagia and knowing what aspects to work on is a result of a good foundation in this speciality, ongoing continuing education, and direct clinical experience. A good measure of curiousity would help as well. Anyone who wants to learn about dysphagia would best benefit from a graduate level course that deals exclusively with the subject. Unfortunately, not all universities have a dysphagia program. Students are often left to fend themselves. I feel strongly that all SLPs working with individuals with dysphagia should attend on site CE classes offered by well known practitioners, regularly. The field is truly very broad, and a comprehensive review of the system from different perspectives definitely helps me improve my diagnostic and therapeutic skills. I find the following websites particularly useful to find CE courses - [...]

I consider Dr. Logemann's book a very good introduction to the subject. I was fortunate to have attended her course in San Diego a few years back and I was able to seek clarification on various issues presented in the book.

The first few chapters explain typical anatomical structures, such as the muscles involved in swallow, cranial nerve function, the sequence of muscular action that bring about a swallow, and the events following introduction of various types/textures of food in the mouth. Dr.

Veterinary Neuroanatomy: A Clinical Approach
You can download Veterinary Neuroanatomy: A Clinical Approach [Kindle Edition] for everyone book 4shared, mediafire, hotfile, and mirror link

Veterinary Neuroanatomy: A Clinical Approach is written by veterinary neurologists for anyone with an interest in the functional, applied anatomy and clinical dysfunction of the nervous system in animals, especially when of veterinary significance. It offers a user-friendly approach, providing the principal elements that students and clinicians need to understand and interpret the results of the neurological examination. Clinical cases are used to illustrate key concepts throughout. The book begins with an overview of the anatomical arrangement of the nervous system, basic embryological development, microscopic anatomy and physiology. These introductory chapters are followed by an innovative, hierarchical approach to understanding the overall function of the nervous system. The applied anatomy of posture and movement, including the vestibular system and cerebellum, is comprehensively described and illustrated by examples of both function and dysfunction. The cranial nerves and elimination systems as well as behaviour, arousal and emotion are discussed. The final chapter addresses how to perform and interpret the neurological examination.

Veterinary Neuroanatomy: A Clinical Approach has been prepared by experienced educators with 35 years of combined teaching experience in neuroanatomy. Throughout the book great care is taken to explain key concepts in the most transparent and memorable way whilst minimising jargon. Detailed information for those readers with specific interests in clinical neuroanatomy is included in the text and appendix. As such, it is suitable for veterinary students, practitioners and also readers with a special interest in clinical neuroanatomy.

  • Contains nearly 200 clear, conceptual and anatomically precise drawings, photographs of clinical cases and gross anatomical specimens

  • Keeps to simple language and focuses on the key concepts
  • Unique ‘NeuroMaps’ outline the location of the functional systems within the nervous system and provide simple, visual aids to understanding and interpreting the results of the clinical neurological examination
  • The anatomical appendix provides 33 high-resolution gross images of the intact and sliced dog brain and detailed histological images of the sectioned sheep brainstem.
  • An extensive glossary explains more than 200 neuroanatomical structures and their function.

This Veterinary Neuroanatomy - A Clinical Approach is an excellent contribution to the veterinary neurological literature.
The clinical anatomical correlations were well done.
The two authors represent considerable expertise in basic neuroanatomy and neurophysiology combined with abundant clinical experience.
This combination makes this a most worthwhile text for the veterinary student, veterinary practitioner as well as trainees in neurology.
I highly recommend this text.

Review of Neuroanatomy book ( indeed a best book!)

Veterinary Neuroanatomy: A clinical Approach is another addition in the field of veterinary neurology. But this is very different from many other veterinary neurology textbooks available in market. It is not intimidating to students and veterinarians because of the presentation of subject matter and size of book (nearly 180 pages). I have gone through many neurology books during my study, clinical practice and registration examination preparation but I liked this book a lot in many aspects ( before this I liked veterinary neuroanatomy and clinical neurology by de Lahunta a lot). Some of important features ( that I liked and was helpful to me) are:

Each chapter starts with MUST KNOW FUNDAMENTALS that leads to clinical pathway with less or very few roundabouts. When you finish the chapter you come with a CONCLUSION not CONFUSION ( many neurology textbooks did second to me). For example, chapters on reflex and motor system and vestibular system leaves no doubt about WHAT NEXT. Many difficult concepts are explained in very lucid style, that tempt you read ( sometimes you can not put down the book for hours).

First three chapters starts like a ladder which decode the subject matter gradually, hence it becomes easy to grapse the core concept. For many people studying neurology is very dry but I liked the language of this book and it is not arid. It gives you concepts( Chapter 9, 10 and 13 are excellent example for this).

Another good quality of this book is its pictures. Most of them are original and great and some pages seem to be overwhlemed by pictures. Easy to remember.

KEY POINTS in each chapter helped me a lot during revision. In 180 pages, you come to know what you must know in neurology as a student and as a general practitioner.

Must for students and clinicians .
After reading this book you agree that---Really, stydying neurology could be a fun.

Since it was introduce in 1987, the antidepressant Prozac has been prescribed to nearly five million Americans. But what is Prozac? Reported to turn shy people into social butterflies and to improve work performance, memory, even dexterity, Prozac has changed millions of troubled lives - but not without raising troubling questions of interest to anyone who has ever tried to improve his or her life.

Is Prozac a medication, or a mental steroid...a cure for illness, or a chemical agent for cosmetic character change? In many cases, Prozac can make people more attractive, energetic, and socially acceptable - whether they're "ill" or not. But when a pill can appear to accomplish the work of countless therapy sessions, seminars, and self-help books and tapes, have we entered an age where pharmacological advances could make our notions of character, personality, and selfhood obsolete?

In the best-selling tradition of The Man Who Mistook His Wife for His Hat, psychiatrist Peter Kramer reads his best-selling, critically acclaimed exploration of these and other issues that sparked a national debate. Drawing on both dramatic case studies and the perceptions of a uniquely insightful thinker contemplating a cultural crossroads, Listening to Prozac will forever change the way you think of the human condition.

I had a desire to go back and reread this work on the tenth anniversary of its publication. I was curious to see how Dr. Peter Kramer's magnificent essay of the mysteries of mood and matter had stood the test of time. I was also interested to see how far the psychiatric-pharmaceutical complex had come in the past decade in dealing with the scourge of depression and other mental disorders.
But before I get too far ahead of myself, exactly what was it about this book that made it such a provocative success in 1993? Two factors come to mind almost immediately. The first is the remarkable story-telling and philosophical style of the author. Yes, the crux of this work was the ethical dilemma of physicians who for the first time possessed the legal and medicinal power to alter personality cosmetically. But we forget over the years that this book was much more than a pharmaceutical morality play. It was a fascinating look at the pioneers of the biotechnology era, a glimpse into the hit and miss processes whereby paradigms and hypotheses were transformed into molecular formulas. The author made lucid for the general public just how mysterious the matrix between the material and the metaphysical truly is. That the new psychotropic drugs could morph a wallflower into a grand dame was becoming evident, so to speak, but the reasons for the change remained well educated guesses, and nothing more, in 1993. Such a tale was both tantalizing and troubling, and no one before Kramer had quite animated psychiatry while circumscribing it in such an elegant way.
The second attraction of this book was the drug itself, Fluoxetine, marketed under the brand name Prozac. Prozac was not the only member of new wave antidepressants, the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors, or SSRI's, available in 1993.

Charting the relentless trajectory of humankind across time and geography, Tony McMichael highlights the changing survival patterns of our ancient ancestors, who roamed the African savannahs several million years ago, to today's populous, industrialized, and globalized world. McMichael explores the changes in human biology, culture, and surrounding environments that have influenced patterns of health and disease over the course of humankind's history, arguing that the health of populations is primarily a product of the interaction of human societies with the wider environment, its various ecosystems, and other life-support processes. Tony McMichael is professor of epidemiology, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He has held positions in Australia, USA, and UK, and has taught widely in Asia, Africa, and Europe. He has advised WHO, UNEP, the World Bank and Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change on public health issues. His previous book, Planetary Overload (Cambridge University Press, 1993) was a widely acclaimed and influential account of global environmental change and the health of the human species.

I am a Grad. student taking a Neural Basis of Comm. class. It's been over 5 years since I've had the prerequisite neuroanatomy class so I've been a little worried about being able to review and catch up. I'm glad I bought this book. This book has really great graphic aids which helps me understand concepts better. Just last night I was reading a description that wasn't making sense to me and then when I saw the diagram on the next page I was able to understand it. The writing in this book is precise and doesn't bog the reader down with so much detail that the concept is totally lost. It's not easy reading, but it doesn't put me to sleep almost immediately like some other speech anatomy textbooks have. Even if it's not your asssigned textbook, if you have to take a neuroscience/neuroanatomy class I'd reccomend this book as a good resource.

This book, in my opinion is the best one in the topic of local anesthesia.
This 6th edition is well written, just like the previous one, covering the whole aspect of local anesthesia. This book is important for every one dealing with local anesthesia in the dental field. The chapter of anatomy is marvelous. The book arrived in excellent condition.

I found this book to be good, however it could be better. Some chapters are well written and others I feel like they're copied and pasted. I would have to sit and reread certain sections for minutes to understand what is written and the author keeps referring back to previous editions, making it all the more difficult at times to grasp. It would also be beneficial if the book were to come with an interactive website and if the cd was sold with it. Instead, you have to pay extra for it and I don't think that's right. It isn't a bad book, just one that'll take you some time getting used to.

Review

"Through the pages of the book, you will meet many people and enjoy a narrative of healing, hope, and transcendent connection with nature. This is a magical journey, told very descriptively and with great reverence and love. It is a story about repairing the web of life - on this side and the other. The best news is that we can practice these ancient teachings in our own backyards or with the herb gardens on our kitchen window sills. Cowan tells us how to do that."

"Eliot Cowan has charted the territory for a medicine of the past and the future. He restores one of the vital links which is the healing power behind our relationship with the plant world. His rediscoveries and teachings embrace the core of deep healing. This book is a great addition to the alternative medicine collections."

It extends the boundaries of consciousness to include not just humans and animals but plants as well. Important not only because of its profound implications for healing, this book is a blueprint for our survival. It illuminates the kind of sacred regard we must develop for all of life on Earth if our species is to survive and thrive."
